Ray's compositions are characterized by rhythmic vitality, contrapuntal intrigue, primacy of melody, and great variety. His 40 years of conducting experience have influenced both the timbres and the practicality of the music, which ranges from soulful to spirited and playful.

 

He received his D.M.A in composition from the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati, where his primary composition teachers were Scott Huston and David Barton. He also worked with Norman Dinerstein, Arnold Franchetti and Robert Wason at Hartt College of Music, Hartford.
